Duplex Nickel/Microporous Chrome

Berkshire Manufacturing offers duplex nickel/microporous chrome for extended corrosion resistance.

Berkshire believes it is one of the only companies in the northeast to offer this process. When plating on plastic for automotive applications started several years ago, it was thought that part failure due to corrosion penetration of base metal would be a thing of the past. Since the ABS plastic base was essentially non corrodible this was thought to be a reasonable assumption. What was not realized was the fact that the electro deposited foil of copper, nickel, chrome itself degrades irrespective of the base material.

The new systems to prevent this utilize four specialized layers of nickel, each with a different electro chemical potential. This in effect slows down greatly the penetration and degradation of the electro deposited foil or coating. The best example of this is the outstanding corrosion resistance of the millions of equipped original equipped aluminum wheels used on cars. A complete summary of this process appears in (Plating and Surface Finishing) October 1996 issue. Copies can be sent on request
